Four months earlier, an Australian publication had reported that while "IMF Director Michel Camdessus stood over Suharto with his arms folded in true colonial style, Suharto signed a new IMF agreement". The photo showing the "humbling of Suharto" was "plastered across the local papers" the next day. Whatever the circumstances, the symbolism was not missed.

Quatre mois plus tôt, une publication australienne avait rapporté la scène suivante : alors que "le directeur du Fonds monétaire international (FMI), Michel Camdessus, se dressait devant Suharto, les bras croisés, à la coloniale, Suharto signait un nouvel accord avec le FMI". La photo illustrant "l’humiliation de Suharto "fut" diffusée dans la presse indonésienne le lendemain". Son symbolisme ne passa pas inaperçu.
