However, the arrival of Yasser Arafat and creation of the PA in the newly autonomous Palestinian areas in 1994 posed an agonising dilemma. Whatever its opposition to the Oslo accords, could it fail to demand its share of influence in the emerging Palestinian entity ?

Son immense popularité, alliée à ses meurtrières opérations . suicide, fit du Hamas un acteur essentiel du drame palestinien. Mais l’installation de M. Yasser Arafat à Gaza et la création de l’Autorité palestinienne dans les zones autonomes en 1994 plaça Les l’organisation devant un dilemme insoluble. Quelle que soit sa position à l’égard des accords d’Oslo, le Hamas pouvait-il renoncer à demander une part d’influence dans l’entité palestinienne en construction ?
