Everything about McDonald’s is redolent of the American-style free market. The company’s global reach, its over-the-top promotional style. Its hyper-rationalised labour process (overseen by a computerised accounting system able to monitoring worker productivity at each of its cash registers, in each of its restaurants, anywhere on the planet). Its position within a carnivorous system of industrial agriculture capable of devouring small farmers to the point of extinction. But the popular drama of David (the French small farmers) fending off the American Goliath, with its simplified narrative, obscures important parts of the story. McDonald’s is at the heart of institutions and social forces that have developed hand in hand with private enterprise.

Tout désigne en McDonald’s l’incarnation du style néolibéral américain : sa stratégie globale, son art impayable de la formule, la démesure de ses techniques promotionnelles, son organisation de travail ultra-rationalisée (contrôlée par le génie d’un système comptable informatisé capable de surveiller la productivité de chacune des caisses enregistreuses, dans chacun de ses restaurants, où que ce soit sur la planète), la position qu’il occupe à l’intérieur d’un système d’agriculture industrielle capable d’acculer les petits fermiers à la ruine. Mais, même si le feuilleton populaire de la Confédération paysanne en David repoussant le Goliath américain sur fond de France profonde peut constituer une arme utile, un récit trop simplifié occulterait des pans importants de l’histoire. Car "McDo" se situe au centre d’institutions et de forces sociales qui ont évolué en liaison avec l’entreprise.
